On Tap: Week of February 1st, 2010

Jeff Peeters 1 February 2010 No Comment

If you listen carefully, you might be able to hear the sound of a tumbleweed slowly drifting across the desert. So much for that “torrent” of new releases that I pimped so heavily last week. Oh well, luckily I still have a queue of games to play, and review games coming in. But enough about me, that’s for later in this piece. You want to know what the hot release feature of the week is. So let’s go down a different path and highlight a PC title in the nerd-encrusted Star Trek Online. If for no other reason than that Shatner freaking RULES!

I love technology and the wondrous things that you can do with the Internet these days. Like streaming movies using either iTunes, PS3, and/or Xbox 360. You know what else I love? Living in Canada. Where thanks to the idiocy of movie studios, record companies, etc. we can’t get nearly the content that our neighbours to the south do. (In the case of the PS3, not getting to download any movies at all.) In this age where you should theoretically be able to access any content at any time, these silly, artificial, country by country rights issues prevent millions of people from PAYING MONEY to get a product they want. And then these dinosaurs wonder why pirating goes on. It’s so awesome that I can’t rent Monsters Inc. from my own house, even though the technology exists, for Peeters Family Movie Night, on iTunes (HD version not available for Canadian customers), PSN (maybe they don’t have it, but I can’t tell because Canada is totally locked out of movies), or Xbox 360 (where I actually CAN get movies, but Steve Jobs probably doesn’t want Pixar movies on Zune for obvious reasons). And Netflix? AHAHHAHAHAHAHAAHAHA!!!!111one. There’s a market so grey, it might as well be black. I don’t believe in torrenting copyrighted material, but WOW are you movie studio guys giving me reason to reconsider that stance.

Anyways, after doing things the old-fashioned way and driving out in the freezing cold to grab the Blu-Ray from Blockbuster (my local Rogers “Plus” store doesn’t seem to want to stock anything on Blu-Ray), we managed to watch the movie. Yeah, it’s lazy, but what did I buy this fancy technology for then?

I hate flying. Had to fly to Calgary on business. No, not GamerPops business, we don’t have that kind of budget yet. :)  It’s times like that when I wish I played the DS more, or had a PSP. Sure, I had my iPhone, but there’s only so much Scrabble and Canabalt one can play. I just couldn’t get into any of the other games I had on my iPhone. I don’t see that platform challenging the big guys any time soon, iPad or no.

Oh, plus I was sick. What an awesome week. I didn’t get to play anything that wasn’t on my iPhone. I did manage to squeak some Bayonetta out late last night though, which is why you’re getting this awesome edition of On Tap a little later than normal. I apologize to the two or three folks who were inconvenienced by this horrible slacking off.
